Background: I've had a layout for about 20 years. I started with two 4'x8' tables and the layout is still growing. I "play trains" and I Don't Do Scenery. My grandchildren play trains with me.
Layout information My layout currently is mostly Lionel 031 and 072 track and switches. I use Gargraves track, Ross dual curve turnouts with NJI switch machines, wired for non derailing used for the inside track of double-tracked helix.
Power: I started with Lionel ZWs. I'm set up to run ZWs and Z4000s on individual blocks with all main track with Lionel's remote control with remote transformer or MTH remote powered by Z4000. My lighting and accessories are powered by Zs. All 120V duplex receptacles in the train room are wired with bottom half switched and the top plug power on all the time. When I leave my train room, shutting off the wall switches shuts off the complete train layout.
Editor Comments Susan's double-tracked helix is a site to behold. It's 6' in diamater and it's 4' - 4" height is impressive. One of the best "train buff" views is from inside looking out where you can see an engine on one round, and a string of cars and the caboose right before your eyes winding down the next round of the helix. The day we were there, she ran her Big Boy with a 47 foot (yes foot) string of cars down the hallway into and around her recreation room (photos below).
